Brown Marmorated Stink Bug 2015/16 Season Proposed Measures

Attn: Shipping Manager

Last year and earlier this year, our shores faced a new threat, that of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. This has the ability to spread rapidly to new areas causing a serious biosecurity concern. What has been made clear in recent days is that this will be an ongoing seasonal threat.

Arrangements have been aligned between Australia and New Zealand with a seasonal risk window for the Stink Bug being declared from 1 September 2015 to 30 April 2016 inclusive. Measures will apply to target goods shipped from all ports in the United States during this time, irrespective of the date the goods arrive in Australia. This initiative will affect those clients that import commodities listed in the attached fact sheet as FCL’s, breakbulk and RORO cargo from the USA. As per last season, new and used vehicles, vessels and high risk machinery are the target cargo, with the department proposing to scale back some tariffs.

Please review the attached fact sheet and if Dieterle & Victory arrange your customs clearance and you believe your shipments may contain any of the commodities covered by this notice, please contact us to discuss the measures that will need to be put in place.

Similarly, when you are placing your order, if you believe from the previous stink bug season that your goods could fall under the tariff codes susceptible to the stink bug issue, then please let us know at that time and we will check for you.

Unfortunately, unless we arrange your customs clearance, we are not privy to tariff classifications for your cargoes. Should this be the case, you will need to check with your own broker for your applicable tariff code(s) to see if you will be affected. If you are, you will need to alert us to this so that we can conduct the appropriate pre-treatment measures at origin for you.

Best Regards,
